A supplemental feed in Google Merchant Center (GMC) handles in minutes changes you'd otherwise wait days or weeks for. This article shows you four real-world situations where this tool pays off.
If you run Google Ads for an e-commerce store, you know the drill. You want to tweak product titles, change a category, or add material information to test if the change improves performance in Google Shopping. Typically, this means writing a spec for a developer and waiting a week, or using a third-party tool. Often, the result isn't what you expected, and the whole process repeats.
A supplemental feed frees you from all that. You just create a table in Google Sheets, add the product IDs and the columns you want to change, and connect the table to GMC. Google starts applying the new values to your ads within a few hours. You can handle the whole process yourself, with no changes to your e-commerce store.

How a supplemental feed works
A supplemental feed is a table in Google Sheets or a CSV file. You connect it to your existing primary feed in the Merchant Center interface. Google then matches products by their id, and the columns from your table overwrite or supplement the data in the primary feed.

In Merchant Center, you set up the new source under Data sources → Supplemental sources. The system handles both a link to a Google Sheet and a CSV upload without issue. The technical setup itself is easy; what matters more is knowing when this tool will save you the most time.
Use case 1: fast hypothesis testing on a smaller group of products
This is the strongest use case and the main reason supplemental feeds exist. You have a theory that better product titles will increase the click-through rate (CTR). Or you think adding the material attribute will help products in Performance Max auctions. Or maybe you want to refine Google Product Categories to attract more relevant queries.
With the traditional approach, you have to write a technical spec, then wait weeks for a change to the main feed from your e-commerce store. Only then can you measure results. If your theory doesn't hold, you have to painstakingly roll the changes back. A supplemental feed is also ideal for quickly resolving specific disapprovals in GMC (missing attributes, bad photos), as detailed in the top 10 reasons for disapproval.
With a supplemental feed the process is far simpler:
- Pick 50 to 500 products from a single category.
- Pull their IDs into Google Sheets.
- Add the columns you want to test (e.g.,
materialor an editedtitle). Fill in the data by hand or with AI. - Connect the table to Merchant Center.
After two weeks, simply compare the CTR, conversion rate, and ROAS for the test group against the rest of the catalog. If the data shows improvement, you have a solid case to give to a developer to implement the change in bulk on the e-commerce store. If the test fails, you just disconnect the supplemental feed. The primary feed remains untouched.
Preparation takes about 30 minutes, and you can do it all yourself.
Use case 2: enriching attributes for AI and Shopping algorithms
Many e-commerce platforms send only the bare minimum of data to the primary feed—often just the product title, description, price, photo, and availability. But for optimal performance in Shopping campaigns and AI Overviews, you need more information. The algorithms perform better with data like material, key highlights, gender, age, or more specific category assignments. The new conversational attributes from Google can also help.
Customizing the primary feed can take months, but you can create the columns you need in Google Sheets in minutes. Focus on these attributes:
material: leather, 100% cotton, Gore-Tex membrane (this information belongs here, not just in the description).product_highlight: three to five clear product benefits, formatted as bullet points.google_product_category: placement at a category depth of 4 to 6 levels.genderandage_group: for precise demographic targeting.size_system: the sizing system used (e.g., EU, US, UK).
AI assistants already use this data, so investing in these attributes improves performance in both standard campaigns and AI-powered search. For large catalogs of over 1,000 products, filling this out by hand isn't feasible. It's better to use AI tools that can process the data in bulk in minutes.
Use case 3: fixing weak product titles
If your e-commerce store sends titles like Jacket M-501 blue or KH-204 brown to your ads, those products will have poor visibility with both algorithms and users. From a title like that, Google can't tell if it's a men's winter jacket or a leather shoulder bag. Yet changing the title structure directly in your store's database often requires developer resources.
In a supplemental feed you can easily rewrite weak product titles:

When crafting the ideal title, stick to this proven structure: brand → product type → key spec → color → size. The first 70 characters are the most important, as that's what users see on mobile devices. Keep in mind that some product categories have their own specific title conventions.
This principle also applies to the description attribute. Instead of using messy HTML from your e-commerce store, you can write a few clean sentences highlighting the main benefits. This helps your products match more accurately with search queries.
A quick tip: If you use the word "waterproof" in the product title, consider putting "water-resistant" in the description. This helps you capture a broader range of related search queries.
Use case 4: custom labels for PPC strategy
Want to segment products in your campaigns by margin, seasonality, sales velocity, or price tier? E-commerce platforms don't typically send this data to the feed because it's not data they use. Margins are internal financial figures, and sales velocity is dynamic.
In a Google Sheet, you can easily populate the custom_label_0 through custom_label_4 columns. It's best to use a clear, consistent structure:

How to set up a supplemental feed in 5 steps
- Prepare your Google Sheet. Either copy the template with pre-filled columns or create your own. The first column must contain the exact product
idfrom the primary feed. The other columns should contain the attributes you want to add or modify. - Open Merchant Center. Go to the Data sources section and add a supplemental source.
- Choose the connection type. Select the Google Sheets option or upload a file in CSV format.
- Connect the data. Paste the link to your sheet and select the primary feed you want to connect it to.
- Fetch the feed. The updates will appear in the system within 1 to 24 hours. You can then check the Diagnostics tab to see if the data was matched correctly.

When a supplemental feed isn't enough
A supplemental feed is a powerful tool, but it has its limits. Don't use it for dynamic data that changes in real time, such as prices, discounts, and availability. This information must always come from the primary feed from your e-commerce store, as a Google Sheet can't keep this data current.
You should also never change unique product identifiers (id, gtin, mpn) in a supplemental feed. Doing so will break product matching in your active campaigns.
For frequent price and inventory changes, it's better to enable automatic item updates in your Merchant Center settings. This allows Google to pull the most current data directly from your website as needed.
